We won the lottery. Well, not really

It has been an amazing week.  Last Saturday we found out that we were both awarded Lilly Teacher Creativity Fellowships for 2013!  These fellowships allow educators the opportunity to create a summer "curriculum" of sorts for professional development.
No, this isn't the normal professional development filled with meetings and specialists brought in to lecture to teachers about how it is bad to lecture to students.  This is active professional development and extension activities to really invigorate and renew your passion for teaching!

Our plan centers around the music of Mozart and Mahler.  (Since we are both music teachers it makes sense that we would do something based on music or musicians.)  This summer we will travel to Salzburg, Austria and embark on a cycling tour of the surrounding lakes region, including the towns of Mondsee, Bad Ischl, St. Georgen, Gmunden, and Strobl.  We will visit two of Mozart’s homes in Salzburg, Mahler’s composing hut in St. Georgen, and the House of Mozart in St. Gilgen. We will be introduced to period instruments at the HörArt Museum for Music Instruments in St. Gilgen.  A visit to the Mozarteum, a non-profit organization that houses the largest special archive of recordings, letters, and documents relating to the life and works of Mozart, will complete our travels.
I am so excited to begin preparations for this summer of adventure!  I'd love to hear from anyone who has visited this region of Austria or has been on a similar biking adventure.
